Crowns and Bridges in Sushant Lok, Gurugram
A crown is a cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth and restores its shape and strength. A bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth by joining a replacement tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. At Modenta Dental Clinic in Sushant Lok Phase 1, Sector 43, Gurugram, crowns and bridges are planned by Dr Gayathri Sreenivasan, an MDS prosthodontist, the specialty that deals with restoring and replacing teeth.

What crowns and bridges are
A crown sits over the whole visible part of a tooth. It is often needed after a root canal, for a cracked or heavily filled tooth, or to improve the look of a badly shaped or discoloured tooth. A bridge is usually three crowns joined together: the two outer ones fit over the neighbouring teeth, and the middle one replaces the missing tooth. Crowns can also sit on dental implants. Zirconia and metal-ceramic are the common materials, and the choice depends on where the tooth is and how hard you bite.
Who it suits, and the alternatives
A crown suits a tooth that is still sound at the root but too damaged for a filling. A bridge suits a gap where the neighbouring teeth are strong enough to support it. Because a bridge needs those teeth to be shaped, an implant is sometimes the kinder choice when the neighbours are healthy and untouched. A small chip may need only bonding. You are shown the options for your teeth before anything starts.
What happens, visit by visit
- Examination and planning. The tooth or gap is checked and X-rayed, and the material and shade are agreed with you.
- Preparing the tooth. Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped so the crown sits snugly, and an impression or scan is taken. A temporary covering protects it in the meantime.
- Fitting. The finished crown or bridge is checked for fit, bite and colour, adjusted if needed, and cemented in place.
Recovery and aftercare
The tooth may feel sensitive to hot and cold for a few days. Brush and floss as usual, and under a bridge use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean the space beneath the replacement tooth. Avoid biting very hard objects, and keep regular check-ups so the gums and the edges of the crown stay healthy.

Frequently asked questions
Zirconia or metal-ceramic, which should I choose?
Zirconia is metal-free and looks natural on front teeth while being strong enough for back teeth. Metal-ceramic is a long-proven option. The choice depends on the tooth, your bite and how it should look, and it is explained at the consultation.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed while it is prepared, so most people feel only pressure. Some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common.
Is a bridge better than an implant?
It depends on the teeth around the gap. A bridge needs the neighbouring teeth shaped; an implant leaves them untouched but needs healthy bone. Both are discussed with you.
How long does a crown last?
With good brushing, flossing and check-ups, a well-made crown usually lasts many years.
