- Placing the post. This is done under local anaesthetic, and most people feel pressure rather than pain. You go home the same day.
- Healing. Bone bonds to the post over a few weeks to a few months. For a front tooth, you are not left with a visible gap in the meantime.
- The crown. A crown is shaped and shade-matched to your own teeth, then fixed on top.
When an implant is not the first step
You need enough healthy bone and healthy gums. Gum disease is treated first, and thin bone can sometimes be built up. Uncontrolled diabetes and heavy smoking slow healing, so both are talked through before any date is set. If a bridge or a denture would serve you better, that is what you will hear.
The first week, and the years after
Some swelling and soreness for a few days is normal and usually settles with simple painkillers. Eat soft food on the other side at first, keep the area clean as advised, and avoid smoking while it heals. Once the crown is on, you brush and floss it like a natural tooth and keep your check-ups, because the gums around an implant need the same care as any others.
