Dental Implants in Sushant Lok, Gurugram

A treatment room at Modenta Dental Clinic, Sushant Lok, Gurugram

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a small titanium post that sits in the jawbone and carries a crown on top. It does not rest on the teeth next to it, and it does not come out at night. At Modenta Dental Clinic in Sushant Lok Phase 1, Sector 43, Gurugram, implants are planned and placed by Dr Gayathri Sreenivasan, a prosthodontist with advanced implantology training from Kyushu Dental College, Japan, and the crown is made and fitted in the same clinic.

What an implant is

An implant has three parts: the post in the bone, which acts as a new root; a connector called an abutment; and the crown you see when you smile. Over a few months the bone grows tightly around the post, so the new tooth can take normal chewing. One implant can replace one tooth, and a few implants can hold a bridge or a full set of teeth.

Who it suits, and the alternatives

Implants suit adults with a missing tooth, a tooth that cannot be saved, or a loose denture they want to replace with something fixed. You need enough healthy bone and healthy gums, and conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking slow healing, so they are discussed first. When bone is thin, it can sometimes be built up. The alternatives are a bridge, which is fixed to the neighbouring teeth, or a removable denture. Each is explained at the consultation so you can choose with the full picture.

What happens, visit by visit

  1. Examination and X-rays. Dr Gayathri checks the gap, the gums and the bone, and tells you plainly whether an implant will work for you.
  2. Placing the implant. Under local anaesthetic the post is placed in the bone. Most people feel pressure rather than pain and go home the same day.
  3. Healing. The bone bonds with the implant over a few weeks to a few months. For a front tooth, you are not left with a visible gap.
  4. The crown. A crown is made to match the shade and shape of your own teeth and fixed on top.

Recovery and aftercare

Some swelling and soreness for a few days is normal and usually settles with simple painkillers. Eat soft food on the other side at first, keep the area clean as advised, and avoid smoking while it heals. Once the crown is on, you brush and floss the implant like a natural tooth and keep regular check-ups, because healthy gums are what keep an implant in place for years.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting an implant hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is common and usually settles with ordinary painkillers.

How long does the whole treatment take?

Usually a few months from placing the implant to fitting the final crown, because the bone needs time to bond with the implant. Your plan sets out the exact steps.

Am I too old for an implant?

Age on its own is rarely the limit. Bone, gum health and general health matter more, and they are checked at the first visit.

What if I do not have enough bone?

Bone can sometimes be built up before or during placement. If an implant is not the right option for you, you are told so and shown the alternatives.

Who places the implant?

Dr Gayathri Sreenivasan, MDS in Prosthodontics and Implantology, who also completed advanced implantology training at Kyushu Dental College, Japan.
