Go to a hospital first if

  • Swelling is spreading to your eye, neck or under your jaw
  • You are having trouble breathing, swallowing or opening your mouth
  • Bleeding will not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure
  • You were hit in the face or head and may have a jaw injury

These need a hospital emergency department, at any hour. The dental treatment can follow once you are safe.

What to do while you get here

Severe toothache. Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently around the tooth in case something is stuck. Take an ordinary painkiller as directed on the pack. Do not put a tablet on the gum, as it burns the tissue.

Knocked-out adult tooth. Time matters most here. Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or water without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk and come straight away.

Knocked-out baby tooth. Do not put it back, because that can harm the adult tooth forming underneath. Bring your child in to be checked.

Broken or chipped tooth. Save any pieces, rinse your mouth, and hold something cold against your cheek if it is swollen. A sharp edge can be covered with a small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax.

Lost crown or filling. Keep the crown and bring it with you. Chew on the other side, and avoid household glue.

Swollen gum or abscess. Do not try to burst it. Rinse with warm salt water and get it seen the same day if you can.

What happens when you arrive

The first job is to find the cause and stop the pain. That usually means an examination and an X-ray, and then either treatment on the spot or a temporary measure followed by a planned visit. A deep infection may lead to a root canal, and a badly split tooth may need to come out. You will be told what is urgent and what can wait.

If it happens after 8 pm

The clinic does not run a night service. Follow the steps above for now, and send a WhatsApp message to the same number so that the team has your details when it opens at 10 am. For anything on the hospital list, do not wait for morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is the clinic open 24 hours?

No. It is open every day from 10 am to 8 pm. After hours, follow the first-aid steps on this page and go to a hospital for serious swelling, bleeding or injury.

Can I be seen without an appointment?

Call first. Same-day appointments are often possible, and the team can tell you the soonest time before you set out.

Will antibiotics fix my toothache?

They may calm a spreading infection, but the source inside the tooth still has to be treated. Take them only when a doctor or dentist prescribes them.

Is a chipped tooth an emergency?

A small painless chip can usually wait a few days. A break with pain, bleeding or a pink spot in the tooth should be seen quickly, because the nerve may be exposed.
